OneTimeSecret has been the go-to "send a secret link that self-destructs" tool for over a decade. It's open source, free, and widely trusted. So why look at alternatives? A few reasons: you might want photos as well as text, INR billing instead of USD, custom short codes, bulk-issued codes, or a managed SaaS rather than a self-hosted Sinatra app. Here's the honest landscape in 2026.
1. 1use.lol
Disclosure: this is our blog. 1use.lol covers the same job as OneTimeSecret and adds short URLs (not just text), one-time photo sharing with a 5-second auto-destruct viewer, plan-based custom codes, and bulk one-time codes for invites/license keys. INR pricing: ₹0 free, ₹499/mo Pro, ₹999/mo Teams. Hosted, not self-hosted.
Pick it if you want one tool for URLs + photos and you pay in rupees. See the full 1use.lol vs OneTimeSecret comparison.
2. PrivateBin
PrivateBin is a self-hosted, browser-side encrypted pastebin (a fork of ZeroBin). End-to-end encrypted — the server literally cannot read your data. Excellent privacy posture. Requires running PHP yourself.
Pick it if you want true E2EE and don't mind self-hosting.
3. Bitwarden Send
If your team already uses Bitwarden, "Send" is built in. Limited free tier (1 MB attachments), unlimited on paid Bitwarden Personal/Family. Strong identity tie-in: only Bitwarden-account holders can create sends.
Pick it if you're already on Bitwarden.
4. Yopass
Yopass is an open-source, Go-based, self-hostable alternative. Encrypted client-side. Clean UI. Demo instance available, but production use means self-hosting.
Pick it if you want a modern Go codebase to self-host.
5. Wormhole.app
Wormhole from Socket is file-share-focused: end-to-end encrypted, up to 10 GB, expiring in 24 hours. Not a URL shortener — built for sending files. Free, no account required.
Pick it if you just need to send a large file once.
6. Firefox Send (RIP, but worth knowing)
Mozilla shut Firefox Send down in 2020 over abuse concerns, but the spec lives on in Send by timvisee — a community-maintained fork. Self-hostable, end-to-end encrypted file send.
Pick it if you want Firefox Send's UX, self-hosted.
How to choose
